Why Trades Matter and how the WorkForIt Scholarship supports students like you

Updated: Jan 24

Not all successful futures start in a classroom. Not all paths to independence and opportunity require a four-year college degree.

We know that skilled trades are essential. From electricians and HVAC technicians to mechanics, welders, and construction professionals, these careers build our communities, keep businesses running, and give students the chance to earn while learning.

Why We Believe in Trades

Skilled trade careers are more than just jobs they are opportunities to master a craft, solve real problems, and build something meaningful. They require intelligence, creativity, patience, and persistence the same qualities any “traditional” career demands, but often without the recognition or financial support students deserve.

This is where the WorkForIt Scholarship comes in. Our goal is to support students who are ready to work hard, pursue their passions, and take control of their future. By awarding scholarships to Isle High school seniors entering trade programs, we hope to remove a financial barrier that might stand in the way of their next step.

Advice for Students Pursuing Trades

  1. Follow your curiosity. Try out different skills and see what excites you from woodworking to automotive repair, from plumbing to cosmetology.

  2. Work hard, but work smart. Take pride in the work you do, and always look for ways to improve your craft.

  3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Mentors, teachers, and professionals in your field can offer guidance, tools, and opportunities you might not see yet.

  4. Invest in yourself. Scholarships like WorkForIt exist to make that investment easier.

How WorkForIt Helps

We want every student who dreams of a trade career to know: your goals matter, your work matters, and your future is worth investing in.

Whether you’re already enrolled in a program or just starting to explore your options, the WorkForIt Scholarship is here to give you a boost.

At the end of the day, trades are about more than work they’re about building confidence, skill, and a life you can be proud of. And every student who applies reminds us why supporting these paths is so important.
